Scientists at the Wellcome Sanger Institute begin sequencing the genomes of all life on Earth
Researchers in Cambridgeshire are collecting moss and lichen samples to sequence the DNA of tardigrades as part of a project to map the genomes of every living species. By establishing these reference genomes, scientists can better understand biological evolution and identify potential new medicines - a process that has accelerated from 18 genomes over 25 years to 48 every single week.
