London baby Theo becomes first in UK to undergo successful in-womb surgery for gastroschisis
At 26 weeks pregnant, Maisie Savage travelled to the US for a clinical trial to correct her unborn son's gastroschisis, a condition where the intestines grow outside the abdomen. Surgeons successfully returned the organs to Theo's body while he was still in the womb, sparing him from the months of intensive care and multiple operations typically required for the condition. Now five months old, Theo is thriving as the first British baby to benefit from this procedure.
