As St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square celebrates its 300th anniversary, new research has revealed the story of William Fatt, a Black chimney sweep who may have been one of the UK’s earliest documented Black voters. The church’s ‘Stories Behind the Stones’ project is uncovering the lives of ordinary Londoners through engraved memorial stones and an online archive, highlighting its long history of activism and compassion.
