Nigella, the only American black tern ever recorded in the UK, has hatched her first chick at Long Nanny Nature Reserve in Northumberland after mating with an Arctic tern. This hybrid chick is the result of Nigella's seventh consecutive return to the site since 2020, and comes after an unsuccessful nesting attempt in 2024. Conservationists are monitoring the chick closely, as hybrid offspring face higher mortality risks.
