Born in Carmarthen in 1878, Dorothea Bate taught herself palaeontology before becoming one of the first women employed by the Natural History Museum. A new blue plaque at the museum's Tring site commemorates her career, which included the discovery of extinct species like the dwarf elephant and helped shape modern understanding of prehistoric environments.
