Researchers from two Scottish universities have identified a microbe, Caledochytrium aldermaii, that reproduces by growing daughter cells inside its own body before releasing them. This discovery could offer a new, natural way to produce omega-3 oils and carotenoids for use in food supplements and aquaculture.
