Archaeologists at Vindolanda Fort near Hexham have uncovered a rare sandstone relief of a Roman 'genius' hidden beneath a fourth-century barrack floor. The carving, which depicts a spirit of prosperity, provides a tangible link to the religious practices of those stationed along Hadrian's Wall.
