Volunteers give 20,000 oysters a pre-release clean in Hampshire conservation project
Native oysters are being restored to the Solent as part of a conservation effort to rebuild their population, which has fallen by 96% over the past century. In Portsmouth, 260 volunteers helped clean 20,000 oysters as part of a biosecurity process before they were deployed to the UK’s largest subtidal native oyster reef. The work included scrubbing away silt, algae, and non-native organisms to protect the local ecosystem.
